BE THE SOLUTION
TO PLASTIC POLLUTION
Be the Solution
Plastic pollution is a real problem in Northern Virginia. Disposable plastic bags, like those you use for groceries, end up in our waterways, roadways, and parks. But YOU can be the solution – switch to reusable bags when you shop.
Plastic Bag Tax
To reduce plastic pollution, local governments have adopted a five-cent tax on plastic bags.
This tax will be charged to customers for every disposable plastic bag used at convenience stores, drug stores, and grocery stores, and includes self-checkout and delivery.

Reduce
Plastic Pollution
Local governments in Northern Virginia are working together through the Northern Virginia Waste Management Board to reduce plastic pollution in the region. Lightweight plastic bags are commonly found in waterways as litter and remain as a pollutant. Unlike natural materials, plastic never completely degrades. It breaks down over time into tiny pieces called microplastics that can end up in our food and water and can harm wildlife.
